Exit and Emergency Light Testing

Emergency light testing and exit light testing will ensure your business has a clear exit path in place in case of an emergency. Evacuation lighting is essential during blackouts and electrical failure, as well as during a fire. A clearly lit path can reduce panic and increase the chances of your staff avoiding any harm.

This is a requirement under current standards and in some cases local councils will require certification to be provided by the person that is authorized to test these units.

Certification must be provided to your local council by a qualified provider that the tests have been done in accordance to Australian standards AS2293.2 and Australian Building codes and that they have passed a discharge test.

How often do I need exit and emergency light testing?

According to the AS2293.2 standard for emergency lighting testing & inspection, all emergency luminaries and exit signs need to be inspected at 6-monthly intervals. During the inspection, a trained individual must test the lamps and replace any defective lights. Each device will also undergo a discharge test in which a technician will turn the battery charger off and simulate a power outage for a duration of 90 minutes. The test will continue until every emergency light or exit sign is tested.

Your lighting system should receive another test every 12 months with all the same procedures as the 6-monthly test, plus the inspection and cleaning of fittings and reflective surfaces. It is important that you hire a professional to test your system instead of simply replacing the battery on your own. Without a formal discharge test, you could be unaware of potential power failures in your system. A trained technician will be able to identify any faults in your lighting through thorough inspection and compliance with the current safety standards.
